The best way to keep your home clean is with a robot vacuum. It can remove dust, pet hair and other surface debris before it becomes a larger problem.

Some robots are able to sync with smart assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant for a hands-free experience. Look for models that are rechargeable and continue cleaning the area they left.

1. iRobot S8

This smart robot vacuum and mop is a fantastic option for a wide range of homes. It has a great navigation system that incorporates GPS and laser sensors. It also has a lot of features and controls accessible via the app. It also comes with a helpful feature that lets you create Cleaning zones for specific areas that require more attention and Keep Out zones where you don't want it to move. As with all Roomba devices, it gets new software updates that make it better over time.

It's costly but it's also among the most advanced robot vacuums ZDNet has evaluated. It has a powerful battery that can sweep all of your home in less than two hours. It can also switch between mopping and vacuuming with the press of one button. And unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the trash bin after each run, it automatically emptys into an even larger waste container on top of its charging dock.

It also comes with a variety of other options, like intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses a camera along with processor-powered smarts in order to recognize obstacles. It rarely gets derailed or entrapped during cleaning, and it's the best at avoiding power cables and other objects I've tested. It's not as reliable in detecting pet waste, or other dangers.

2. Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid

While the Anker-owned Eufy has made an impact in the field of low-cost robot vacuums, it's not yet an all-in-one model that can also mop. The X8 Hybrid is a new model that offers a range of features that are advanced and can compete with much more expensive models.

Eufy's main selling point with the X8 is its laser navigation. The X8 makes use of laser mapping technology that is more accurate than previous Eufy devices. It also takes significantly less time to create an accurate picture of your space and stores multiple maps, which is great for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is a great vacuum cleaner for floors that are clean. It can easily sling debris through the side brushes and into the 400ml dustbin. The tyres are adept at securing edges and corners despite being circular. It's not the best robot vacuum and mop combo cat litter scooper, however as our tests show it can only remove about 90 percent of the fur off hard floors.

The mopping mode that is the basic one uses the same reservoir of water as the vacuuming mode. While this is a good option for spills that are not too large, you can't regulate the amount of water it is using and this will reduce its effectiveness for more serious stains. However, it does an excellent job of removing pet hair, and has a higher percentage of hair removal than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

The company is known for its quiet home appliances, Miele's RX2 robot vacuum has excellent cleaning power, beautiful design and excellent navigation. However, it does have a few operational oddities which prevent it from being considered as the top overall smart robot vacuum with self empty vacuum.

Like the latest models from iRobot, the RX2 features dual-sensor mapping that uses a LIDAR sensor to map out an area and two 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real time. After the room has been identified, you can assign virtual no-go zones and sections that you would like to be the robot. You can also change the cleaning modes, initiate cleaning manually or see live feeds of the cameras onboard from the main screen.

The RX2 has excellent sensors that can detect furniture and other obstructions immediately. Its sweeping and suction power are top-of-the-line cleaning up surface debris from carpets with medium piles and dust on floors that are unfinished. But it's not the most agile robot on the market. As with many others it's not a very good climber and is prone to problems with things like thresholds made of metal transition strips.

A lot of people purchase a robotic vacuum for the ease of setting a schedule in an app and not thinking about it for weeks at one time. It's crucial that a robot is able to accomplish the task that's why our ZDNet staff tested and reviewed several of the most popular models to help you select the perfect one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This budget-friendly robot looks like a typical robot, but it's a step up in performance and features. Its smart mapping system generates 3D and 2-D maps of your home and makes use of them to navigate around and avoid obstacles. It is able to detect common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real-time. The controls are more basic than the competitors. There's a cleaning button at the top and you can either start it using the app or via voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule daily or weekly cleanings, designate no-go zones and check its cleaning history. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and looks attractive in your home. The dust bin on the rear is easily accessible to empty, and the removal of the filters is also simple.

5. Eufy 11S

Eufy 11S is an excellent option for those looking for an automated vacuum cleaner that is simple and doesn't have any frills at a low cost. It lacks some of the more advanced features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, which are available in more expensive models, however, if you don't require those functions you can save a little money by purchasing this model.

This robot is very easy to setup and use. It also suggests that you clean the dustbin, change the filters, and change or wash the brushes as necessary.

Roomba 990 by iRobot

The Roomba 980 is iRobot's most popular robot vacuum. It's costly however it's an excellent performer and is arguably the most sophisticated robot vacuum you can purchase. Its self-navigation and environmental mapping are a joy to behold. It also comes with more advanced automation features than many competitors, including the ability to set virtual boundary markers with its mobile app. It's a capable robot vacuum, even though its app is a bit sluggish and the 980 spins out when it comes across cables.

We love the 980 because it uses its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneity localisation and mapping (or vSLAM) to store your home's floor plan. It then uses the information to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path for every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient robot vacuum than most high-end robots.

The 980's other features include dual multi-surface rubber brushes which grab dirt from carpets and hard floors and an ejector brush that moves debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. The sensors for floor tracking help it navigate across furniture and along edges, while Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling down stairs. It also automatically returns to its base station to ensure hassle-free charging between sessions. While the 980's battery life and bin size aren't quite as impressive as some other robot vacuums, it's a sturdy and reliable machine that will keep your floors spotless for hours at a time.
