Window Sash Repairs

The sash is an interior frame that can move upwards and downwards in windows that are open. This article will teach you how to do a variety of simple repairs to sash.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes can give an elegant appearance to your home. They are also sturdy and can last many years provided they are properly maintained. However, they can be damaged or degraded over time, due to exposure and normal wear and tear. Fortunately, sash repair specialists can bring your windows back to their original condition and keep them looking great for a longer period of time than replacement windows.

Weather stripping is the primary issue to take care of when fixing windows that have sash. It is located on both the frame and the sash. If it's worn or loose, out, it could cause drafts and other problems. To fix it, begin by determining the brand of your window and glass manufacturer date (etched in the corner of the glass or on the aluminum spacer between panes). Take the sash off, and mark its size and width so that you can purchase replacement weather stripping that matches.

Then, remove the sash from its holder and place it on an even surface that allows you to reach all four sides. If the sash is double-hung, you'll have to take off the weights and their ropes that should have fallen into the pocket of the jamb liner. After removing the sash using the utility knife, you can remove the old weather stripping by hand or with the putty blade.

After removing the parting stop and trimming it to length and then apply a thin layer of glazing compound to the bottom of the sash. This will help protect the putty, and give your sash an updated appearance.

Sash Hardware

The hardware that supports the window sashes may wear out with time and use. This could lead to the window or door that is difficult to open or close. The good thing is that fixing and replacing this hardware is generally very simple and cost-effective. If you're having trouble opening a sash, spray some oil into the jamb channel. Then, you can slide the sash out to see if this resolves the issue. If the problem persists it's likely to be due to the sash's balance. Ideally, window sashes must be able to open and close with very little effort, but this is a difficult task when the weights are worn or if the sash that joins rail isn't properly glazed. Sash Weights
